Leave No Trace

Protecting the Places We Love

If you’ve spent any time on my social channels, you already know how much I care about keeping our trails, lakes, forests, and wild spaces beautiful. Exploring the outdoors is a privilege, and with that privilege comes responsibility.

That’s where Leave No Trace comes in.

Leave No Trace isn’t a rulebook or a guilt trip. It’s a simple, thoughtful framework that helps us enjoy nature while protecting it for the next person, the next season, and the next generation. When we practice these principles, we’re not just being “good hikers.” We’re being good stewards of the places that fill our lives with joy.

Below are the 7 Leave No Trace Principles, broken down in a clear, real-person way.

1. Plan Ahead & Prepare

A good adventure starts before you hit the trail. Research the route, check weather, pack the right layers, know the rules, and make sure the hike matches your experience level.

Why it matters: When you’re prepared, you’re less likely to make choices that harm the outdoors...like cutting switchbacks, getting lost, or needing rescue.

2. Travel & Camp on Durable Surfaces

Stick to established trails, campsites, rock, gravel, sand, or snow. Avoid wandering into fragile vegetation or creating new paths.

Why it matters: One set of footprints becomes many, and unofficial trails can damage ecosystems for decades.

3. Dispose of Waste Properly

Pack it in, pack it out. Yes…everything. That includes food scraps, tissues, and anything else that doesn’t naturally belong outdoors. If you're camping, know how to handle human waste appropriately (I promise, it’s less scary when you learn the right method).

Why it matters: Trash affects wildlife, water quality, and the experience for everyone who comes after you.

4. Leave What You Find

Rocks, flowers, antlers, artifacts…leave them for others to discover. Take all the pictures you want, but let nature stay natural.

Why it matters: Removing things, even “just one wildflower”, adds up and can damage ecosystems and cultural sites.

5. Minimize Campfire Impact

Use a camp stove when possible. If fires are allowed, keep them small and in established fire rings. Fully extinguish them (cold to the touch) before leaving.

Why it matters: Wildfires often start from small mistakes. Fire scars and leftover soot can last for generations.

6. Respect Wildlife

Give animals plenty of space, store food properly, and never feed them. If an animal changes its behavior because of you, you're too close.

Why it matters: Wildlife deserves to stay wild...not stressed, not dependent on humans, and definitely not posing for a photo.

7. Be Considerate of Others

Keep noise low, yield on trails, control pets, and create a welcoming environment for everyone outdoors.

Why it matters: Nature is for all of us. Kindness goes a long way in making the outdoors feel safe and inclusive.

Why Leave No Trace Matters

The more people fall in love with the outdoors (which I love), the more important it becomes to protect the places we explore. Leave No Trace isn’t about perfection, it’s about awareness and intention. Small choices add up to big impact.

When we enjoy responsibly, the landscapes we adore stay wild, healthy, and beautiful for years to come.

My Commitment

As That Outdoorsy Gal, I end every caption with a nod to Leave No Trace, because these principles guide everything I do outside. My goal is to inspire adventure while also inspiring stewardship.

Enjoy the beauty, but always leave it better than you found it.

Part travel blog, part trail journal, part outdoorsy content hub. If it inspires you to get outside, you’ll find it here.
